![]() ![]() I'm saying that devs can't be as creative with their use of animations as maybe they want to be if they want to sell to the largest number of people possible. So the standard solution seems to be to just streamline, and if you want a mobile release the desktop version will suffer from the same restrictions for the dev's and the release schedule's convenience.Īgain, I'm not saying devs will completely ignore or avoid animations for the sake of their mobile player base because, as I said, the tag is too attractive to ditch them completely. I've also seen devs try to handle this by making a separate lighter weight version for mobile with more compressed images and foregoing the animations but by then they're basically working on two games at once and it slows them down. ![]() I've seen games that started out with excessive amounts of animation right down to idle animations on regular conversation parts that have had to retroactively go back and swap them all out with stills just because the android version can't handle them. Several hundred dollars might not seem a lot when you compare it to some of the big games but it was probably close to a quarter of everything that game was making at the time. a compressed version worked but it was a temp fix so changes had to be made going forward. There were a few mobile users that claimed the game still worked fine and it had playtested okay but there was a loud number of players saying the game wouldn't install or would blackscreen on launch etc. I've had some insider knowledge on 4 games to varying degrees, and one of them saw a drop of several hundred dollars in their Patreon monthly income when their mobile release got too much for older mobile devices to handle. I'm not just throwing out an opinion here, I'm saying what I've seen first-hand. Since mobile players of RenPy games are common and vocal, it can alienate a large portion of a dev's customers if their mobile ports (official or otherwise) are too hefty and then present a lot of complaints.Ĭlick to expand. You seem to be overlooking the part where I said "too hefty." The problem with animations in RenPy is that they can be very heavy and really inflate the game's size. It's somehow evocative of the messy textures in the original game while elevating the aesthetic to being more finished-looking and intentional in a way that's subjectively better than the actual LiS remasters and sequels did it. I just really like the handpainted stylized look here and would like to see more. His Twitter is the exact same kind of dead. I can see he hasn't updated Patreon in almost a year and a half and one of his last posts was about the next release of SN coming soon™ and that's probably hurt his rep under this name, but does anyone suspect any other artists of being a pseudonym or whatever. I can understand if this project was too much work for one person but I think he'd still have done well just making still renders and animated loops in this style. Does anyone know if LocJaw is making any other content anywhere? They likely won't avoid animations completely because the tag is a selling point.īack on the topic of this particular game though. Best to keep animations reserved for big moments or as low frame loops and frame swaps. just raises the potential for more work and slower releases. Smart devs will avoid too many animations in a RenPy project entirely because they expect the mobile market to come into play and a separate build with extra compression on images etc. Since mobile players of RenPy games are common and vocal, it can alienate a large portion of a dev's customers if their mobile ports (official or otherwise) are too hefty and then present a lot of complaints. This game and Offcuts probably should of been made in Unity rather than Renpy.Ĭlick to expand. The problem with animations in RenPy is that they can be very heavy and really inflate the game's size. If you got 3D models then just import them into Unity so you can actually animate models instead of having to create basically stop motion animation in Renpy. Then there are some games that have lots of animations or use 3D models and I no have idea why they decided to use Renpy instead of Unity. And yes I know there is a Renpy port of the game. The original Rick and Morty game Away Home or whatever it's called is a perfect example of a game that should of been made in Renpy instead of Unity. If you are making a animation heavy game and using 3D models then make it in Unity. That is the thing that infuriates me about VN creators, if you are going to make 2D game that is dialogue heavy with basically no animations and 3D models then make it in Renpy. Renpy has good dialogue and save game mechanics but is terrible animations and 3D models. Unity is good for 3D models and animations, but has terrible dialogue controls and save game mechanics.

The subject of the photos is the disappearance of the Chinese "Queue", the long pigtail you can see on the gentleman on the left. Why would a British infantryman be sending photos of Chinese gentlemen to his family and friends? ![]() The teen boy fantasy rhetoric on display in the filmmaker's Playboy interview make it more difficult than ever to get swept away by the story of "Avatar." Over a decade after the film's release, its initial magic has worn off for many, giving way to harsher criticisms of its handling of sensitive themes and even its then-cutting-edge visual effects. He goes on to explain that he designed the loincloths based on the garb of a real Indigenous people, but then follows that apparent commitment to realism up with an in-depth description of the characters' breast design. "Right from the beginning I said, 'She's got to have t***s,' even though that makes no sense because her race, the Na'vi, aren't placental mammals." ![]() The amount of darkness "shield" remaining on an enemy is represented by a corona of light that appears when aiming at an enemy. The strength of the darkness protecting an enemy can vary among the Taken. Besides the conventional shooter gameplay need for reloading ammunition, the player must also insert fresh batteries into the flashlight when they run out, or wait for it to recharge slowly. The handheld lights Wake can carry can be boosted, which destroys the darkness faster, but also reduces the light's battery level. This puts significant emphasis on flashlights in conjunction with conventional weapons, such as a revolver or shotgun. The Taken are protected by a shield of darkness, initially rendering them impervious to attack they can only be injured with a firearm after exposure to light, which burns the darkness away. When enemies are close, Alan can perform a slow-motion cinematic dodge maneuver. Besides the Taken, the player must combat flocks of possessed ravens and animated objects. They vary by speed, size and the amount of damage they can take, and some can teleport between short distances. These enemies, dubbed the "Taken", are murderous shadows that attack Wake, wielding weapons of their own, ranging from mallets and knives to shovels and chainsaws. In the game, a "darkness" is taking over humans, animals, and objects. The player controls the eponymous protagonist Alan Wake, a well-known novelist who is going through writer's block. The main gameplay happens in various areas of Bright Falls-such as the forest, a national park, or a farm-during the night time these are punctuated by calmer, non-combative sequences set during the day. The game is primarily set in the fictional idyllic small town of Bright Falls, Washington. In interviews, the game's creators hold that the game does not belong squarely in the survival horror video-game genre. Īlan Wake is described by Remedy as "the mind of a psychological thriller" and "the body of a cinematic action game" put together. The ammo counter for the gun is visible at the top right, and the flashlight meter at the top left. Gameplay Above, the player, as Alan, "fight with light" against a Taken. A sequel, Alan Wake II, was announced at The Game Awards 2021 in December 2021 and is scheduled for release in October 2023. Later, Remedy released Control in 2019, which takes place in a shared universe with Alan Wake. One cancelled sequel became the foundation and inspiration of Remedy's next title, Quantum Break. Alan Wake's American Nightmare, a stand-alone spin-off, was released in February 2012 on the Xbox Live Arcade service. Alan Wake was awarded the first spot in Time magazine's list of the top 10 video games of 2010. The game received positive reviews from critics, has garnered a cult following, and is often praised for its visuals, sound, narrative, pacing and atmosphere. After an intense two-month period, the team reworked the game to be a more traditional linear game broken into an episodic approach but which better supported the planned narrative structure and capable of reusing much of the open world assets already built. The game was originally developed as an open-world survival game as an anti-thesis to Remedy's prior linear Max Payne games, but struggled over three years in merging the gameplay with the action-thriller story they wanted to tell. ![]() Additionally, a six-episode live-action web series called Bright Falls acts as a prequel to the game, and a number of related books also expand upon the Alan Wake story.Ĭhiefly written by Sam Lake, Alan Wake took over five years to create. ![]() ![]() The game itself consists of six episodes, and the storyline is continued by two special episodes, The Signal and The Writer, that were made available as downloadable content (DLC) within the same year of the game's release. In its pacing and structure, Alan Wake is similar to a thriller television series, with episodes that contain plot twists and cliffhangers. The story follows bestselling thriller novelist Alan Wake as he tries to uncover the mystery behind his wife's disappearance during a vacation in the small fictional town of Bright Falls, Washington, all while experiencing events from the plot in his latest novel, which he cannot remember writing, coming to life. The game was released in May 2010 for the Xbox 360, with a Windows version following in February 2012 and a remastered version released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows in October 2021, as well as a Nintendo Switch version in October 2022.
